Alaska 2018 - Day 0, 1: Anchorage, Tours, and Walking

We're in Alaska with Shannon and Jason, mostly for a cruise from Anchorage to Vancouver, but we've extended it a few days on either end.

We flew from Newark to Anchorage, via Seattle, on Wednesday afternoon. The trip was mostly uneventful, but it was just before midnight when we landed, local time (4 AM back in PA).

It looked like late dusk outside.

After waiting for a stuck baggage conveyor belt, and a brief Lyft ride, we got to the Airbnb around 12:30 AM. We unpacked a few things and went to bed.

Just before 8:30 AM, We set out on foot to find some breakfast, downtown. It was around 3/4 of a mile to the Snow City Cafe.

While we were waiting for a table, we took caffeinated beverages across the street to Resolution Park.

While we were eating, Jason got a phone call about the afternoon activities possibly being moved up to 11 AM. Having no specific plans for the hours between breakfast and the afternoon, we agreed.

Our flightseeing appointment at the airfield was only a few miles down the road, so we walked around for 15 or 20 minutes before hailing a Lyft.

A woman from Sound Aviation met us at a gate, on a scooter, and led us to the plane.

After a brief safety overview, we taxied out onto the airstrip and took off, headed for Knik Glacier. One of the passengers from the previous tour stayed on the plane and took the next tour with us. (We later realized that the rest of her family waited in the car for her.)

The tour was pretty incredible, lasting over an hour.

After the flightseeing tour, we Lyfted back downtown and signed up for a 2 PM trolley ride around Anchorage, including a visit to Earthquake Park and a drive through Lake Hood Floatplane Base.

Next, we stepped into the Alaska Public Lands Information Center to watch a few short movies about Alaska.

Having completed our formal learning for the day, we strolled down to the river, sort of behind the knife factory, to see if anyone was having success at catching salmon.

It was just after 5 PM by the time we finished our stroll, so we took a Lyft to the Moose's Tooth (pub and pizzeria) for some excellent pizza and a few adult beverages.

It was after 7 PM when we finished, but it only looked like early afternoon to us, so we decided to walk the 2.5 miles back to the apartment.

Sometimes, I wish Google Maps knew about elevation changes.

It's after 11 PM as I'm writing this, and it's still bright enough outside to see the mosquitoes flying around.  Currently, Anchorage has more than 18 hours of daylight.

Tomorrow's tentative plans (so far) include: food, bike ride, hike.
